Fishing licenses (required)

Everyone 16 and older needs a New York State freshwater fishing license. Kids under 16 fish free, and there's no separate trout stamp. Owning or renting property in New York does not make you a resident for license purposes.

LicenseNon-residentNY resident
1-day$10$5
7-day$28$12
Annual$50$25 ($5 age 70+)
  • Buy online through NYS DEC (DECALS) or at a license agent, and carry it (paper or phone) while fishing.
  • The 7-day license is cheaper than three 1-day licenses.
  • On a guided trip, each angler needs their own license.

No-kill (catch-and-release) waters

Open year-round. Artificial flies and lures only, and every fish goes back.

Seasons & etiquette

  • General trout season runs April 1 to October 15; from October 16 to March 31, most streams are catch-and-release with artificial lures only.
  • Much of the Beaverkill above Roscoe and the Willowemoc above Livingston Manor is private club water. Fish only where you see yellow DEC Public Fishing Rights signs.
  • In July and August, if the water is above 65°F, keep fights short to protect the trout.
  • Regulations change; check the current NYS DEC trout regulations before you go.
